Network Manager for Ubuntu hogs CPU when using mobile broadband, so i was looking for other software that would do a better job. Ayo recommended Wicd, which was great for Wifi and Wired networks. I then searched a little more for a mobile connection manager and found the incredible 'Launch2Net' from the lovely people at http://www.novamedia.de .
Download for Ubuntu (both 32 and 64bit versions) from here:

huzzah!
Or if you are on Vodafone you can download the Vodafone Mobile Connect app from :

(Look for Netbook Remix / Ubuntu)
You will need to download ozerocdoff first from the list, then the app vodafone-mobile-connect_svn20090615_all.deb
